Introduction[edit]

MediaWiki in principle is a collaboration platform that gives all users full access to all pages, and authorization to read, edit, and move pages. There are only a few functions and pages that are restricted for use by bureaucrats and administrators; the rest is fair game. From the perspective of the Wikimedia organization and its websites - and fair to say: most typical deployments of MediaWiki - this is perfectly fine. Nevertheless, there are many organizations that are inspired to use MediaWiki and are hold back because of its limitations in page access and control of ownership.

This discussion captures some ideas on how page access and ownership is controlled in MediaWiki, and which requirements can be identified and developed for improvement.
