From semantic-mediawiki.org

January 3 2014. Semantic MediaWiki 1.9.0, the next major version after 1.8.0, has now been released. This new version adds a lot of important new features and enhancements, fixes bugs and brings major improvements to the code and its stability.

Noteworthy improvements are the availability of many new code tests which assure and improve platform stability as well as the introduced support for the dependency manager Composer which helps installing and upgrading SMW and thus is the new installing method of choice. Other important changes include better performance mechanisms (new parameters, new script), improvements of the parser functions "#subobject" and "#set" (multiple value support), new and enhanced API modules ("browsebysubject", "smwinfo"), new special page "Concepts" as well as the new "smw-admin" user right. Further information about what is new may be read on the SMW 1.9.0 page.

Please refer to the help page on installing or on upgrading Semantic MediaWiki to get detailed instructions on how to do these tasks.
