A semantic component to MediaWiki was first publicly proposed in August 2005 in the paper "Wikipedia and the Semantic Web: The Missing Links" by Markus Krötzsch, Denny Vrandečić and Max Völkel, presented at Wikimania 2005. The first version of the Semantic MediaWiki extension was released the next month.
